Wyoming took the opening drive 80 yards in just five plays to take an early 7-0 lead as Corey Bramlet connected with Jovon Bouknight for a 21-yard touchdown. On the following drive, the Cougars used a balanced attack to even the score, driving 84 yards on five rushing plays and five passing plays. Brown capped the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Luettgerodt got the ball back for BYU as he recovered a fumble and Beck found Harline for a 14-yard touchdown pass to give the Cougars a 14-7 advantage. Wynel Seldon answered with a 69-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14. BYU responded with a methodical 17-play scoring drive that covered 89 yards and took 8:21 off the clock and ended with Brown scoring on a six-yard run to give BYU the 21-14 lead. Lettgerodt was credited with his second fumble recovery on Wyoming’s next drive and seven plays later, Fahu Tahi strolled into the endzone to give BYU a 28-14 lead. The Cowboys scored first in the second half and threatened to tie the score at 28 but Luettgerodt came up with another fumble recovery that led to another scoring drive as Harline make a spectacular one-handed grab in the back of the endzone to make the score 35-21.

Utah controlled the first half, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and 10 in the second while limiting the Cougars to a field goal. The Utes scored on their opening possession when Ratliff found Hernandez in the endzone on a three-yard pass. Ratliff threw another scoring pass in the first quarter and scored one rushing touchdown in the second quarter. BYU began its come back in the third when Brown scored two touchdowns within 1:33. The first was a five-yard run that capped the Cougars’ first drive of the half, an eight-play, 72-yard drive. On the second play of BYU’s next drive, Brown broke free for a 64-yard run to cut the lead to 24-17, the longest run of his career. Utah pushed the lead back to 14 at 31-17 when Ratliff hit Hernandez for a 48-yard score but the Cougars came right back at the end of the third when Beck hit Todd Watkins for a 13-yard touchdown. Utah pushed the lead back to 10 with a field goal in the fourth but BYU tied the score at 34 when Beck threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Matt Allen and Jared McLaughlin kicked a 37-yard field goal. Utah had the ball first in overtime and Ratliff hit LaTendresse for the winning touchdown on the Utes’ second play. BYU failed to convert on its chance in overtime as Beck’s pass on fourth down fell incomplete in the endzone.
