BYU sprinted out to a 10-point lead in the first half and held on for a close 10-7 victory over the Lobos.
Matt Payne started the scoring for BYU, connecting on a 20-yard field goal to cap a drive that included an 89-yard run by Reynaldo Brathwaite. Matt Berry hit Phillip Niu for a 29-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter despite breaking a bone in his throwing hand earlier in the game.
The Lobos' DonTrell Moore scored on a three-yard run to pull New Mexico within three points, but the Cougars would seal the victory after converting a third down on a 26-yard halfback pass from Brathwaite to Toby Christensen late in the game.
