Despite leading for most of the game and holding the Cardinal to just 200 total yards, BYU fell to Stanford 18-14.

BYU had an opportunity to take the lead late in the game, driving to Stanford's nine-yard line before true freshman quarterback John Beck was sacked twice, forcing the Cougars to turn the ball over on downs with 23 seconds left in the game.

BYU scored the game's first points on a 27-yard pass from Beck to Toby Christensen. The Cardinal answered BYU's score with a four-yard run by Kenneth Tolon, but the Cougars blocked the extra-point attempt to cling onto a one-point lead. Stanford took the lead on a 38-yard field goal. BYU would regain the lead on a double pass with Lance Pendleton, in at wide receiver, hitting Daniel Coats for a 31-yard touchdown. The Cardinal took the lead for good with just under four minutes remaining on a 14-yard run by Stanford quarterback Trent Edwards.
