BYU eclipsed the 50-point plateau for the second-consecutive game in defeating UNLV 55- 14 to improve to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in Mountain West Conference action. BYU held the Rebels to a season-low two yards rushing, the fourth time the Cougars held their opponents under 100 yards rushing, and picked off three Rebel passes which led to 21 points. BYU also registered five sacks, led by Justin Maddux who had 3.0 sacks for a combined loss of 22 yards. Offensively, the Cougars rolled up 224 yards rushing and added 267 yards passing. John Beck passed for 267 yards and three touchdowns while completing 23-of-34 attempts. BYU’s leading receiver was Jonny Harline, who had 80 yards and one touchdown on six receptions. Freshman Wayne Latu had 93 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries while Curtis Brown scored a rushing and a receiving touchdown.

The Cougars got on the board first for the fifth straight game, scoring on a one-yard run by Fahu Tahi. UNLV tied the score in the second quarter when Greg Estandia caught a five-yard touchdown pass. BYU went back ahead on the following drive on a 45-yard field goal by Jared McLaughlin. From there the Cougars broke the game open as Justin Luettgerodt picked off a pass on the Rebel’s next possession and returned it to the UNLV 24-yard line. Several plays later Beck hit Todd Watkins for an 11-yard score. Another BYU interception, by Kayle Buchanan, got the ball back for the Cougars who scored six plays later on a one-yard run by Curtis Brown. BYU added another field goal before the half to take a 27-7 lead into the locker room. The Cougars continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Rebels 28-7 as Brown, Tahi, Harline and Latu all scored.
