Matt Berry threw for 276 yards and three touchdowns to help the Cougars earn a victory in the opening game of the season. BYU fell behind early after the Yellow Jackets connected on a 26- yard field goal in the first quarter. BYU answered quickly, scoring on a 38-yard pass from Berny to Daniel Coats. Coats finished the game with six receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns Following the first Coats touchdown, Georgia Tech scored 10 unanswered points to take a 13- 10 lead into halftime.
The Cougars opened the second half with an 80-yard touchdown drive to take the lead for good on a 15-yard pass from Berry to Coats as BYU's defense would hold the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the second half. The Cougars added another touchdown pass from Berry to Toby Christensen and a Matt Payne field goal to account for the final score.
