Game Notes

450th victory in program history

After three low-scoring defensive battles, the Cougars' offense exploded for 44 points and 416 yards in a 44-36 victory over San Diego State, ending a two-game losing skid. BYU's offense accumulated only 34 points in its previous three games.

When the game started, it didn't look like things were going to go the Cougars' way. After a 49-yard kickoff return gave the Cougars excellent field position, quarterback John Beck fumbled the ball on BYU's second play from scrimmage. Brook Miller picked up the fumble and scampered 44 yards to score the game's first touchdown less than one minute into the game.

BYU scored its first touchdown on a 4-yard run by Beck. The touchdown was the Cougars' first rushing touchdown in 30 quarters. After a 70-yard pass from Adam Hall to Jeff Webb put the Aztecs up 14-7, BYU exploded for 24 points in the second quarter to take a 31-24 lead into halftime.

Fahu Tahi scored the Cougars' first touchdown of the second half on an eight-yard pass from Beck, and Matt Payne kicked a 47-yard field goal to put the Cougars up 41-24. But the Aztecs roared back, scoring 14 straight points to cut the Cougar lead to five points before Matt Payne added an 18-yard field goal to ice the game.
