A few big offensive plays, a suffocating defense and tough special teams play were just enough for the Cougars to defeat Notre Dame 20-17 in the season opener and keep coach Gary Crowton's perfect home opening record intact. Receiver Todd Watkins, playing in his first game for BYU, had five receptions for 115 yards, including key catches of 50 and 37 yards. Austin Collie, another first-year receiver, caught three passes for 54 yards and a touchdown, BYU's final score, which also proved to be the difference in the game.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 13-0 lead behind a five-yard touchdown run by Fahu Tahi and two field goals of 44 and 53 yards by Matt Payne, who was named to the Lou Groza and Ray Guy Award watch lists. Payne also punted the ball nin times for an average of 46.8 yards, with six being downed inside the 20. Collie's 42-yard touchdown reception from Matt Berry, who replaced an injured John Beck, put BYU up 20-3. Notre Dame closed the gap to three at 20-17 with two second half touchdowns but the Cougars were able to run out the clock to preserve the win, thanks to a sideline-catch by Watkins that gave BYU a crucial first down.
