Striking with a 33-yard touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage, the Cougars capitalized on two fumbles to run up a 14-0 score in the first three minutes of play. At halftime the score was 38-6, and the game, which was carried on regional television, was out of sight. Gifford Nielsen hit 30 of 40 for 321 yards and six touchdowns, two each to Todd Christensen and Mike Chronister. Marc Wilson came in for the entire fourth quarter, hitting freshman Stan Younger with a TD pass. Tailback Casey Wingard put the last TD on the scoreboard with a 45-yard run. With both teams going to the air, the game lasted three hours, 38 minutes.
