The Cougars dropped their second strait game against a Pacific 10 Conference foe, falling to the No. 1 ranked USC Trojans 42-10 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU held the Trojans scoreless in the first quarter and struck first on a 46-yard Matt Payne field goal in the second quarter. John Beck played the entire game, completing 18-of-34 passes for 194 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. The touchdown, the Cougar's only in the game, was a 69-yard pass to Todd Watkins in the second quarter. Watkins finished the game with four receptions for 94 yards.

USC came on strong in the second ond quarter, scoring 21 points. Reggie Bush scored two touchdowns, one on a 21-yard pass from Matt Leinart and the other on a 66-yard run. After a scoreless third, the Trojans scored another 21 points in the fourth quarter. A bright spot for the Cougar defense came in the first quarter when John Burbidge picked off Leinart. It was the first BYU BY interception of the season and the first interception Leinart had thrown in 111 pass attempts. Along with his second quarter field goal, Matt Payne blasted a 79-yard punt in the third quarter. The punt set a career best and was one yard shy of setting a school record.
