After falling behind 16-0 to No. 21 Boise State, the top scoring team in the nation, the BYU offense came alive but fell just short in a 28-27 loss to the nationally ranked Broncos. John Beck completed 20-of-35 passes fora career-high 390 yards and two touchdowns. Todd Watkins caught nine passes for 211 yards and one touchdown, a 79-yard grab in the third quarter. Austin Collie, who had five receptions for 94 yards, caught a 57-yard touchdown pass that put the Cougars up 27-22, a lead that would slip away late in the fourth quarter. It was by far the best offensive performance of the season as BYU finished with 416 yards of total offense and zero turnovers.

The first Cougar score came late in the first quarter on a two-yard run by Curtis Brown that was set up by a Brandon Heaney fumble recovery. Matt Payne added field goals of 32 and 42 yards in the second. Payne had a chance to win the game, but his 37-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the game sailed wide left. The defense also put in a strong performance, recording six sacks while holding the No. 1 offensive team in the country, which had been averaging 55 points, to just 28.
