The Cougars followed up a strong offensive showing against Air Force with a 49-16 blowout win over San Diego State in Provo. John Beck again led the attack, completing 15-of-25 pass attempts for 313 yards and three touchdowns. Todd Watkins caught three passes for 135 yards, including a 68-yard reception for the Cougars' first touchdown early in the opening quarter. Austin Collie added three catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns. His second touchdown went for 82 yards, the longest passing play of the season for BYU.
The running game was strong as well, with Curtis Brown running the ball 17 times for 106 yards and one touchdown. It was Brown's fourth consecutive game rushing for over 100 yards.
After Watkins' touchdown early in the first, the Cougars' offense struggled to move the ball, settling for two field goals of 43 and 34 yards before halftime. Payne's 43-yard field goal was his 13th consecutive from 40-49 yards, breaking the record set by former Notre Dame kicker John Carney during the 1984-85 seasons.
The defense was strong in the first half, shutting out its opponent in the first quarter for the fifth consecutive game and holding the Aztecs to a field goal.
The second half explosion started with 8:45 left in the third quarter when Brown scored from three yards out, putting the Cougars up 20-3. BYU added two more touchdowns and a field goal in the third to take a 36-3 lead. Each team added two touchdowns in the fourth, including Collie's 82-yard strike.
