The experts didn't give Utah much of a chance, and they were right: although the Utes kept the Cougars under their scoring average to that point in the season Even so, the contest, which was 17-8 going into the final quarter, produced a little post-game heat. Quarterback Marc Wilson tossed three TD passes in the fourth quarter as the Cougars pulled away. Wilson set a new NCAA passing record (one game) with 571 yards. The old mark was held by Tony Adams (1972, also against Utah. Mike Chronister caught only four passe but had 176 yards in receptions.
