The Cougars' battle with the San Diego State Aztecs was the icing on the cake, an undefeated season. Not only did the victory make the Cougars the first team in the school's history to finish a season undefeated, but it sewed up the WAC championship, entitling the Cougars to a berth in the Holiday Bowl. BYU showed the largest crowd it had played before (46,121 in the stands, plus millions at home watching the game over national television) that the Cougars can run the ball as well as throw it. For the first time this season, the Cougars accumulated more yards rushing than passing. Eric Lane ran away with the rushing stats for 111 of the Cougars' 320 rushing yards. With an additional 293 yards in passing, the Cougars chalked up a season high of 613 total offensive yards. The Cougars controlled the Aztecs from the very beginning of the game when Marc Wilson completed four touchdown passes in. the first half. BYU put the game on ice when it scored three touchdowns in the first nine minutes of the second half. Royce Bybee filled in for Marc Wilson in the final 16 minutes of play and maneuvered another touchdown. All the Cougar scoring was done in 66 plays, as opposed to San Diego's 88. The win enabled the Cougars to face their Holiday Bowl opponents with a spotless 11-0 record.
