Only a few minutes before game time, Jim McMahon was named as the starting quarterback. A few days before the game McMahon had been listed as a doubtful starter or one who would not see playing time because of his shoulder The first quarter was a tight game, notched at 7-7, with Hawaii applying good defensive pressure. So intense was the pressure against BYU that at one time the Bows nearly had McMahon trapped on an attempted punt. However McMahon wheeled to his left on the run and avoided the pursuit long enough to punt the ball left-footed for 33-yards, and the ball was downed on the UH one-yard-line. When the final tallies were in, McMahon had attempted an astonishing 60 passes and completed 31 of them. McMahon played the entire game and was selected by the Hawail media as offensive player of the game. The defensive player of the game was BYU's Hawaiian Brad Anae, a defensive end The 49.139 fans witnessing the game at Aloha Stadium was a new record in the islands BYU now 6- 1
