One sportswriter described the game perfectly when he said: "It was the best of times and it was the worst of times. Records fell like overripe apples as the two teams engaged in a four-hour passing marathon that produced 116 points and 1,160 yards of total offense. Jim MoMahon set two new NCAA records and tied a third while completing his fifth consecutive game of passing for more than 300 yards The bad times for the Cougars came late in the game when defensive tackle Pulusila Filiaga hit a referee and was ejected from the game and was suspended for the remainder of the season. McMahon threw for six touchdowns and ran for two more as the Cougars acquired 710 yards of total offense. On the first play from the line of scrimmage, McMahon hit Eric Lane on a short pass, and the speedy back rambled 76 yards for the touchdown Royce Bybee produced his first touchdown of the year, passing to Homer Jones for 29 yards: Utah State came roaring back in the fourth quarter to score 16 points and close to within 18, but Coach Edwards put the regulars back in to preserve the win BYU now stands at 5-1.
