First win against an opponent that finished season with 10+ wins (10-1)
BYU was San Diego State's only loss of the season

Nobody could pick the final score on this one, since it was supposed to be one of those high-scoring battles pitting the running of David Turner of SDS against the passing of BYU's Gifford Nielsen. Nary a touchdown was scored. Sophomore Dave Taylor kicked two field goals, and the Cougars tallied two more points on a safety midway through the third period. Nielsen hit on 10 of 25 for 80 yards, his lowest output of the season. It was the first blanking of SDS in 57 consecutive games, and BYU linebacker Rod Wood was chosen WAC defensive player of the week. The Aztecs rebounded after that defeat and finished the year with a 10-1 record. It was BYU's first shut out since 1970, only the third in 12 seasons.
