Second largest crowd in Hughes Stadium history turned out to see how the undefeated Rams (5-0) would go against a BYU team that had lost its All-America quarterback the Saturday before. Marc Wilson, a relative unknown at the time, started in place of Nielsen. Wilson hit Tod Thompson on a 38-yard TD pass on the Cougars' first drive. CSU countered on the ensuing kickoff with Ron Harris taking the kick 100 yards to tie the score. Wilson and teammates proceeded to put the game out of sight by halftime, 42-10. Three hours after the opening kickoff the final score was 63-17. Wilson had connected on seven TD passes in covering 332 yards through the air. There- after, the national honors started tumbling in.
