The Cougars opened the 2008 season increasing the nation’s longest-active winning streak to 11 games by defeating Northern Iowa 41-17 in front of a sell-out home crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Junior tight end Dennis Pitta racked up 213 yards receiving on the afternoon with 11 catches, while junior quarterback Max Hall threw for 486 yards with two touchdowns, marking the most yards since posting a career-high 537 yards against Tulsa in 2007. Hall connected with senior receiver Michael Reed to score the season opening touchdown, while running back Harvey Unga made a 19-yard reception for the Cougars’ second touchdown. Unga rushed for two additional touchdowns before the end of the half. Hall rushed for a one-yard touchdown and freshman running back Bryan Kariya made a 14-yard run for back-to-back touchdowns by the Cougars in the fourth quarter. The defense allowed a field goal and a 76-yard pass and Northern Iowa recovered a fumbled and returned it for a touchdown.
