The Cougars made up for last year's 7-24 homecoming embarrassment against the Aggies by soundly defeating interstate rival Utah State in front of the largest crowd in Aggie history. Most of the stats were relatively close, except for the passing statistics, which proved to be the difference. Completing 20 of the 27 passes attempted and accumulating 394 aerial yards, the Cougars outscored the Aggies even though the Cougars drew numerous penalties. Eric Lane scooted over the goal line five times for five TDs, a new WAC and school record, and Marc Wilson connected with Bill Davis and Scott Phillips for the remaining two. Brent Johnson was good for six of seven PATs. The Aggies' touchdowns were limited to two passes and a run, plus a field goal. BYU now 5-0.
