During a heavily contested first half, the Cougars pulled off a couple of quick scores in the game which would have meant the WAC championship for the Rams. Of the Cougars early scores, the picture perfect 71-yard touchdown pass from Jim McMahton to Lloyd Jones who scampered down the sideline for the score was a pleasant memory. Both second quarter strikes were touchdown passes from Jim McManon to Clay Brown. Brown's two TD receptions boosted him to a new WAC record with 13 touchdown catches. With the score 28-14 in favor of BYU at halftime: the Cougars felt far more secure than the 14-11 margin which separated CSU and BYU for the first quarter and a hall. The backbreaker for CSU came at the beginning of the third quarter when BYU defensive end Brad Anae intercepted a screen pass which he carried 45 yards for a touchdown. McMahon threw his fifth TD pass of the game with 10 minutes left in the third quarter then exited from the game. McMahon had broken tour major NCAA records with the CSU tallies added to his season totals, tied several others and re set some of his own national marks McMahon was 23 of 33 for 441 yards and was relieved by Royce Bybee who threw for 101 more yards. BYU now 9-1.
