As the last obstacle between the Cats and a share of the title, Utah figured a win would make their season. They knew Nielsen would pass, and set their defenses accordingly, It didn't help much, and Nielsen passed for 415 yards (three touchowns) to join a group of eight players in history of the game who have passed for more than 3,000 yards in one season. WAC and school records tumbled. BYU rolled up 183 yards rushing and rushed for two touchdowns. Utah set a pass record of its own, going to the air 51 times. Defensively the Cougars gave up only 65 yards rushing. Utes ended with a 3-8 overall record.
