In one of the biggest shutouts in school history, the 15th-ranked Cougars dismantled the UCLA Bruins 59-0 at LaVell Edwards Stadium and gave BYU at 3-0 mark on the season. Quarterback Max Hall set the BYU single-half touchdown record with six in the first half and finishing with seven in the game before being relieved in the third quarter. The seven touchdown passes tied the school record held by Jim McMahon and Marc Wilson. Hall spread his arsenal across many options of the offense. Junior receiver Austin Collie totaled 110 yards and Dennis Pitta added five receptions for 47 yards. Receiver Michael Reed matched Pitta’s five receptions for a total of 90 yards and one touchdown. Harvey Unga proved to be a valuable tool running for 71 yards and grabbing 42 yards off of five receptions. The Cougars effectiveness on the offensive side of the ball was matched by the defense’s performance. They stopped all UCLA scoring attempts and forced six turnovers. Matt Putnam grabbed an interception and both Ian Dulan and Jan Jorgensen sacked UCLA quarterback Kevin Craft. BYU scored one touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Hall to Pitta in the first quarter before pouring on an additional 35 points in the second quarter. Hall and Collie totaled back-to-back touchdown receptions, including a 37-yard pass. Reed was the beneficiary of a 12-yard pass, while Unga caught a 15-yard touchdown pass. Hall connected with Pitta on a two-yard touchdown pass to head into the half with a 42-0 lead. Hall met Unga for a six-yard touchdown before leaving the game in the third quarter. Mitch Payne made a 24-yard field goal and Wayne Latu made a 13-yard run into the end zone to give the Cougars a 59-0 victory.
